Deborah Segun
Figurative Painting
Nigerian painter Deborah Segun has rapidly emerged as one of the most exciting voices in contemporary figurative painting. Since first exhibiting her work in Nigeria in 2018, Segun has had solo shows in London, Ghana, and Athens, capturing international attention with her bold, emotionally charged portraits.
Segun's paintings depict Black subjects with dignity, complexity, and psychological depth. Her work challenges historical representations while creating new visual narratives that center African and diasporic experiences. Her use of color is particularly striking - vibrant, unexpected palettes that imbue her subjects with vitality and presence.
Most recently, three pieces of her art were featured in Maddox Gallery's winter 2024 group exhibition, alongside her highest-profile solo show at the Saatchi Gallery with BEERS London. Segun's work is increasingly sought after by collectors and institutions interested in contemporary figurative painting that speaks to our moment.
